The Capuchin Charism

The Capuchins are one of the largest men’s Religious Orders in the Church, present all over the world. We are officially called the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin: ‘Friars Minor’ meaning ‘Lesser Brothers’. We strive to live the Gospel as a fraternity of brothers and priests, praying together as a community, being a source of nourishment and strength for each other so as to go out and share God’s love with others. Our charism of minority inspires us to seek to be lesser in our relationships with others so as to serve God in the other and help build and foster relationships and communion.

Like every religious order, the Capuchin charism is to build brotherhood, inspired by the Gospel and the example of St Francis of Assisi wherever we find ourselves. This leads Capuchins to be involved in a great diversity of ministries, since every area of church life and ministry needs the healing touch of wholesome relationships. Capuchins are drawn strongly to the places and people whose relationships are particularly fragile and vulnerable. Thus, many Capuchins minister among poor and marginalized people and by living the Gospel, we see our talents and potentials realized in our community life and ministry.
